Scholarship RecipientsFrom time to time, we receive updates from our past scholarship recipients and share some of those with you here. As a recipient of a Lake Travis Education Foundation scholarship in the spring of 2007, I would like to extend my appreciation for the opportunity it has provided me. Being the oldest child, I was a little nervous about setting out for college. I have started out at Austin Community College this year, which matched my goal for a college because it has small class sizes, teachers who stop at nothing to help you succeed, and it is easy to transfer to Texas State University, where I will finish with a degree in Special Education. I am grateful for your scholarship which helped to provide me the opportunity to achieve my goal of becoming a Special Education teacher. Thank you.
Megan Gray Thank you so much for granting me the scholarship money last year to put towards my tuition at the University of Texas at Austin. Being able to attend this college has been such a blessing; the communications program has already taught me so much, and through it I have been able to get involved with the TSTV program - Texas Student Television - a completely student-run, student-organized local station. I've already gotten the opportunity to be on camera! The Education Foundation is such an incredible program to bring to the Lake Travis area, and I know it has over the years helped many students such as myself to have the opportunity to pursue the college experience they have always dreamed of. Thank you so much for supporting such a great program in our area, and again for what you have given me!

Brooke Beaver Laura Hartmann here, scholarship recipient in the year 2004! I would like to thank you again for your generous scholarship; because of you I was able to have a wonderful freshman year at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. School went well for me this year; I was on the Dean's List second semester. My major is History and my minor is Educational Psychology, and I plan to get a Master's in Education through AC's teacher program and a Master's in Special Education after my undergraduate work. Austin College has also provided me many opportunities; for example, I am going abroad during January term next year to study in Rome, Vienna, and Istanbul. I was also able to get involved in many things outside of the classroom. One of my passions in high school was riding and caring for my horse, and I was so fortunate that he was able to join me at school last year. Though it was difficult at times, I was able to visit him on average three to four times per week and take riding lessons. I grew as much in my riding ability as I did in any other part of my life! Another organization I am involved in is Young Life, which is an outreach ministry in high schools. I averaged about six hours work every week at Young Life-related events second semester. My final volunteering combined two interests: horses and kids. I drove an hour once a week to volunteer at Equest therapeutic riding center in Wylie, Texas to help physical therapists use riding horses as a tool to improve their patients. Even though it was far away, it was so fun and rewarding to see the progress in the children and the excitement they felt when they were around the horses. I also found a home for my spiritual growth at Sherman Bible Church. This summer I worked at a horseback riding day camp teaching children how to ride at the barn and life-guarding at the pool. Soon I will be retuning to school, horse in tow, to start my sophomore year. I am continuing my study of German language in hopes of studying abroad in Vienna, Austria during my junior year. While I was unable to make the drive to Wylie to work with Equest this semester because of scheduling conflicts, I plan on becoming a volunteer with the Sherman Special Olympics or another organization to give me experience with special ed. I will also spend my time with the Young Life ministry; however, I am switching to working with middle school students because that is the age group I am specializing in for education. The
college experience is so exciting, challenging, and fun! Your
scholarship really helped me to achieve all of this. Thanks again for
picking me!
As a recipient of a Lake Travis Education Foundation scholarship in the spring of 2004, I would like to extend my appreciation for the opportunity it has provided me. I was fortunate to have had the experience of two older sisters help me in refining my college selection in my senior year and with their help I chose to attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. I have learned that selecting the college that best matches my goals and expectations is the first step in having a rewarding college experience and finding a successful career. With the end of my freshman year quickly approaching, I have reflected on how quickly the year has gone by and how I have thoroughly enjoyed my college experience. I began the year with feelings of anxiety and nervousness and the fear that it would take me a long time to adjust to college life. However, what I discovered was that the college atmosphere at TCU was very supportive and the opportunities to become involved in campus life allowed me to adjust quickly. I am looking forward to next year with eager anticipation. College life has been more fast-paced than I anticipated and I get less sleep than I thought I would. However, I feel that college provides me with the opportunity to utilize my unique abilities and interests in an atmosphere that fosters individuality and autonomy. I am grateful for your scholarship which helped to provide me the opportunity to attend the school of my choice. Thank you.

I have recently changed my major to Wildlife and Fisheries Science and I plan to obtain a Masters in Education to become a secondary school science teacher. I currently have a 3.8 grade point ratio and have completed 76 hours toward my major. This past year I have served as an Assistant Director in MSC Freshmen in Service and Hosting for the Class of 2008. It has been an amazing experience for me to be a leader, mentor, and friend to my freshmen and I am currently in the process of applying to be on the executive staff for next year. I have been chosen to be a Fish Camp Counselor for the Class of 2009 in Session E Aqua Camp Quick, which I am absolutely thrilled about! This week I will interview to be a Muster Host this spring, and this summer I will travel with other Aggies to study Spanish and education in Costa Rica. I have been given endless opportunities through the financial support I received from the Lake Travis Education Foundation Scholarship. Not only have I been able to further my academic education, but I have also gained many valuable skills that will help me in my profession and throughout my life. I cannot thank you enough for recognizing my potential and offering assistance to me so that I could become the proudest member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2007!
Angela Hallock My name is Katelin Frey and I received the Jean Drysdale Scholarship in May 2003. I am now a sophomore at Wake Forest University. I am currently a Chemistry major on the pre-med route. I hope to one day be an OB-GYN. I made Dean's List both semesters last year, participated in club soccer, volunteered with Special Olympics, and as a Screamin' Demon (basketball fans group), I attended every game! I also have a job where I work 10-15 hours a week as the men's soccer team's trainer, wrapping ankles, working the ultrasound and electrical stimulation machines, getting water, and attending all home games. I love it at Wake and appreciate the scholarship that helped me to be here and afford this school. Thank you!

Stephanie Joiner, a 2003 LTEF Scholarship Recipient, is in her sophomore year as a Musical Theatre major at Oklahoma City University. Her freshman year, she was cast as “Bianca/Lois” in the University’s production of Kiss Me, Kate! She participated in the Honors Program and was on the President’s Honor Roll both semesters with a GPA above 4.0. The summer after her freshman year, Stephanie was hired to perform with Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma. There, she was seen as “Shy” in Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, “Star-to-Be” in Annie, chorus in Chess and Jekyll and Hyde. Now, as a sophomore, Stephanie continues singing, dancing and acting while also working as a Staff Writer for The Campus (OCU’s student newspaper), a student assistant at the President’s Office and a singer at St. Francis of Assisi and St. Joe’s nearby Catholic Churches. She remains a part of the Honors Program and is co-Music Head for OCU’s Catholic Student Union.
Stephanie Joiner Congratulations on the approaching 20th anniversary of helping students' college dreams come true! Our son, Billy Fleming, is a 2002 graduate of LTHS and a scholarship recipient. Billy is now a junior in the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas. This semester he was accepted into the Professional Public Accounting program. Upon successful completion of his studies, he will graduate with a BA, MPA and a CPA. We are very proud of him and we know he will have to work hard to fulfill this commitment. Fortunately, he has the benefit of having a lot of people in his life who are committed to him. Throughout his schooling he had dedicated teachers who prepared him well for college, coaches who helped push him to do more than he thought he could, and friends and family to love and support him. But there is also a community of people whose contributions to your Foundation helped him take that first step into college. The thrill and dread you experience when you drop your child off at the dorm and say goodbye is a memory that stays with you forever. We wish we could thank all the people who made that moment possible, but a special thanks goes to the Foundation. Your generosity is not only helping make college a reality for many; it is creating the "Friends of the Foundation" of the future! Bill
and Kitty Fleming Allegra made good use of her scholarship. She graduated from Texas Tech in three years with a degree in Math. She is currently working on her Master's and her teaching certificate at UT. She's doing great and we appreciate LTEF's contribution to her success. J.
Hobbs Because of LTEF and other scholarship providers, I began carrying out my college plans soon after graduation in 2000. As a scholarship recipient, I not only benefited from the financial support, but also from the encouragement that gave me. You might say I've been on a fast track ever since. In December 2002, I was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Science from Tarleton State University. Soon thereafter I began flying for What-A-Burger, where I stayed for a year and a half. I recently completed the training for a freight company. During this time, I qualified as a Flight Instructor and began to make real estate investments. Income from flying and properties has made it possible for me to recently pay off my student loans. In appreciation for what LTHS and LTEF did for me, I want to help someone in the class of 2005 get off to a good start. Enclosed you will find an expression of my gratitude.
James Justin Milam Eric Beeson was a 1999 graduate of Lake Travis High School. He received a $1000 scholarship from the Foundation. Despite Eric's exemplary grades in school, this was the only financial assistance he received. He has continued to make wonderful grades at UT Austin through his undergraduate work and the Master's program in Accounting. He is scheduled to finish the Professional Program in Accounting, take his CPA exams, and being working for a top four accounting firm in 2005. As a family we were grateful for the support given Eric by the Foundation, and we certainly used it to its fullest. We consider the Lake Travis Education Foundation an outstanding resource for beginning college students from our area and sincerely thank you all for helping Eric and other Lake Travis students as they begin their college careers.
Douglas W. Beeson Thanks in part to the generosity of your foundation, Cara completed her undergraduate degree in three and one half years at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Human Biology and graduating with a perfect 4.0 average. She is currently in her second year at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and is interested in becoming a surgeon. Keep up the good work! Dan
